Attractive 1923 letter from August Hermann president of the Cincinnati Reds to pitcher Bill Harris for the 1924 season. Harris pitched in 22 games in 1923 posting a 3-2 record with a 5.17 earned run average prompting Herrmann to offer the young pitcher a 1924 contract representing a raise of $100 per month. Herrmann went on to state "You did not get the opportunity to fully demonstrate your ability the past season but am sure you will get the chance this coming season. Of course if you make good which I certainly expect you to do an increase in your salary will follow; this letter can be held by you to that effect." For 1924 Harris pitched in three games posting a 0-0 record with a 9.00 earned run average. He would not see another major league game until 1931 when he came up with Pittsburgh. Ultimately Harris pitched in parts of 7 seasons with Cincinnati Pittsburgh and Boston posting a 24-22 record with a 3.92 ERA. Hermann was the chairman of the three-man national commission which ruled baseball from 1902-1920 until Judge Landis was appointed Commissioner. Difficult letter from a long-time baseball executive. LOA from James Spence Authentication.
