While we are proponents of Set Registries as a way of measuring the relative strength of complete graded sets and while we feel that the highest-ranking sets on registries are certainly worthy of the prices they achieve we also feel that circumstances occasionally cause the Set Registry to get it wrong. This is absolutely one of those occasions. The 1961 Golden Tulip Chargers issue is an exceedingly difficult regional issue each card distributed in a cellophane wrapper inside packages of Golden Tulip Potato Chips. One of the early attempts to promote teams in the fledgling AFL the league's early struggles coupled with the method of distribution and the AFL's lack of early popularity (despite averaging nearly 28 000 fans at home games the 12-2 chargers drew just 20 216 fans at their home opener) have made these cards exceedingly rare today. In addition the cards' distribution inside bags of greasy potato chips has resulted in significant condition issues with the few surviving examples of each card typically found with oil staining. Such is decidedly not the case with this selection a gorgeous 22-card complete set. The cards are absolutely gorgeous each image clear and crisp with spectacular eye appeal. Each of the cards however has been graded AUTHENTIC by PSA ostensibly due to slight trim around the edges that simply has zero impact on the eye appeal of the cards. The PSA Set Registry has precisely three 1961 Golden Tulip Chargers sets registered. The SGC Registry has one with each card also graded AUTHENTIC. Of the four only the SGC-Registered set (in the collection of one of the football hobby's most advanced collectors) and this one are complete. The other two are 45% and 14% complete respectively. None have an average grade higher than VG/EX. Despite all this this set - the only complete set on the PSA Registry and according to our eyes the finest of the four - ranks just #2 despite the #1 set being just 45% complete. In this case the grade weighting simply gets it wrong and does not factor in scarcity or eye appeal. 1961 Golden Tulip Chargers cards are rare. Competition is stiff among type card collectors whenever the cards appear at public auction. This is a complete 22-card set with outstanding visual appeal one of just a few complete sets from the issue we have ever seen. 22 cards total.
