When considering the most underappreciated postwar cards in the hobby the 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle has to be near the top of the list. Completely overshadowed by its Topps cousin the card boasts a beautiful illustration of the young Yankees outfielder a timeless pose that is easily among his most attractive. Yet due to the notoriety of the 1952 Topps card the Bowman issue flies largely under the radar. Presented here is a signed example of Mantle's second-year Bowman card. One of just eight signed examples to have been assessed by PSA/DNA the card is more scarce than the 1952 Topps (11 signed) or 1951 Bowman (15 signed) cards and while the population reports provide quantifiable evidence of scarcity the infrequency with which signed 1952 Bowman Mantles appear for sale is quite noticeable. Searching through public auction records for "Signed 1952 Mantle" yields multiple high-dollar sales of the Topps card but virtually no sales of the Bowman counterpart. This example is a well-centered collector-grade one with strong image quality and centering despite the clear overall wear. The signature which appears to have been applied with some sort of fiber-tip marker is clear and smooth though somewhat light (PSA offered a grade of EX-MT 6). Still it is easily visible and legible against the image an exceptional signature on an important if underrated card.
