The T227 "Series of Champions" issue is a 24-card set issued in packages of Honest Long Cut and Miner's Tobacco packages in 1912. A multi-sport set the issue only features four baseball players: Home Run Baker Chief Bender Ty Cobb and Rube Marquard. The issue does however feature a number of other athletes and sporting figures among with a few racehorses. The set is the only one that features baseball cards with advertisements for Miner's Extra tobacco on the reverse. The issue is notoriously condition-sensitive with the overwhelming majority of the cards found in POOR or FAIR condition. Aside from the cards' larger size there is really no great theory as to why this is however it is clearly the case: of 561 cards from the issue graded by PSA just 20 have graded EX or better. SGC's population report on the issue is slightly more difficult to ascertain however the condition percentages are similar. Presented here is an extremely attractive near-set from the issue needing just three cards (Bruce Brown Ty Cobb and CP Rodgers) for completion. While the cards are all in lower technical grade all present quite well. A complete condition breakdown is as follows: SGC GOOD 30 (2 cards): Johnny Coulon Dixie IV; SGC FAIR 20 (4 cards): Budd Goodwin Harold Hilton Rube Marquard Melvin Sheppard; SGC POOR 10 (12 cards): Abe Attell Alfred DeOro Ess HK Willie Hoppe Jack Johnson Frank Klaus WJ Kramer Matt McGrath Ralph Mulford Uhlan Ad Wolgast C. Zbyszko; SGC AUTHENTIC (3 cards): Home Run Baker Chief Bender Jack McDermott. An attractive collection of cards from one of the more difficult tobacco sets each displaying quite well for the assigned grade needing just three cards for completion. 21 cards total.
