Though the grading label on the postcard refers to Griffith Park the stadium in the background of this exceptional photo is unmistakeably Shibe Park in Philadelphia; the date printed in the lower-right corner of the card further evidence in support of that. In the second game of a doubleheader that day between the Senators and Philadelphia Athletics in front of 27 000 spectators Walter Johnson gave up six runs to take his 7th and final loss of the season. By that date his record was 29-7; he would finish the season with a 36-7 record and an astonishing 1.14 earned run average in 346 innings pitched - the best season of his career. Johnson is depicted on the mound photographed from the grandstand along the first base line. The card itself presents as an EX card with the numerical grade reduced considerably due to the letters "ECO" written in ink on the reverse. Otherwise some natural toning around the edges and mild corner wear are the card's primary flaws.
