Measuring 27" x 11" deep when closed this magnificent display box is similar to those that are occasionally found in the hobby and marketed as clothing displays for a department store or a retail display for hats. The reality is that this is a box that contained sample swatches for a manufacturer of wool garments and was used both by traveling salesmen and also as a countertop display for tailors and the like. The handsome sturdy box closed tight but would open into a well-engineered display featuring three compartments in which swatch samples of the season's latest fabrics would be stored. The inside of the box lid revealed an attractive colorful lithograph - in this case a scene of well-dressed spectators watching a baseball game (though other boxes exist that depict football hockey tennis and more). The opened box makes for a wonderful display one of the most beautiful turn-of-the-century baseball display pieces we have ever seen. Constructed of heavy board it is very large and attractive and actually does make an excellent display for hats - in fact prior to consigning it to Love of the Game our consignor stored several vintage baseball caps in the three compartments inside the box leaving the display open for a striking vintage baseball display.
