The 1974 Topps Deckle Edge set is a 72-card set that contains a black and white player image on the front with a faux newspaper clipping on the reverse along with blue "handwriting" identifying the player name team position date and location of the picture. The cards are considered scarce and are among the more difficult to complete supplemental Topps issues of the 1970s.In addition to the "regular" deckle edge set straight-edged proof versions of the cards have been found. In a past LOTG auction we featured a number of stars and Hall of Famers from the set all of which were highly regarded cards. For this auction we are presenting one large group of proofs featuring minor stars and commons along with Hall of Fame pitcher Fergie Jenkins. These cards are extremely difficult to come by. 1974 Topps Deckles are very scarce; the proof versions even more so. Many of the Hall of Famers that we had graded for our auction were among the only graded copies known. Locating these cards in proof form would prove to be a very difficult undertaking. Because the cards were never commercially issued and do not have the deckled edges associated with this set grading companies do not assign numerical grades to the proof cards. The majority of the cards in this group are worn and would grade in the VG range - some worse some better - if numerical grades could be assigned.
