Small but significant scorecard for an 1876 football game between Harvard and Yale. This was just the second game between the two teams ultimately won by Yale 2-1. The Yale football program is one of the oldest in the country having begun in 1872 and the annual Yale/Harvard game (which they call "The Game") began in 1875. It is the second-oldest continuing rivalry and the third most played rivalry game in college football history. The significance of "The Game" is that its rules were adopted by other schools as were many other elements of the game such as fight songs and team mascots. Folded to 4 1/16" x 5 1/2" the program is in excellent condition with very little wear and even toning. The game is partially scored on the reverse in vintage pencil. The 1876 Yale team was undefeated in three games and was considered the National Champion. Led by Eugene Baker and Walter Camp (considered the "Father of American Football " the team had no coach and defeated Harvard Princeton and Columbia shutting their opponents out in all three games. Of particular note is that since this was the first game of the season for Yale it also represents the first game of Walter Camp in his first year at Yale. An incredible artifact one of the earliest football programs we have seen for the second game of one of college football's earliest rivalries.
