The 1960 Fleer "Baseball Greats" set is an interesting issue featuring Fleer"s idea of the 79 (80 counting a variety of "#80" cards that have surfaced over the years) greatest players in the game. Certainly many of them were included like Ty Cobb Babe Ruth Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson. The set also contained some dubious choices however like Marty Marion Bing Miller and Paul Derringer - excellent players for sure but surely not among the all-time greats. The set was issued this way of course because Fleer"s chief competitor (Topps) possessed a monopoly on active players. Featuring retired players was Fleer"s only option when it came to producing trading cards. The set was not commercially successful and while Fleer continued to produce cards of retired players in 1961 this was not a successful tactic for the company.Today the issue makes a nice set of the game"s greatest players. Even players who in 1960 may not have been among the greatest-known players like Heinie Manush Branch Rickey and Rabbit Maranville eventually made the Hall of Fame. Loaded with Hall of Famers this is an excellent way for a collector to obtain a set of cards featuring the all-time greats and this issue has been known to be a jumping-off point for novice collectors an entry-level set for collectors wishing to learn about prewar baseball. This is a "collector grade" set a complete set of 79 cards mostly in off grade. Despite the condition issues (mostly corner wear with a few creases here and there as well) this is an excellent set featuring many of the greatest players ever. A condition breakdown is as follows: EX or better: 5% VG/EX: 27% VG: 48% G: 14% and F/P: 6%.A breakdown of the keys: #2 Mathewson (G) #3 Ruth (VG/EX) #6 Johnson (VG) #28 Gehrig (VG/EX) #42 Cobb (F) #44 Anson (VG/EX) #47 Young (G) #62 Wagner (VG) and #72 Williams (G). A classic set featuring some of the greatest players ever to take the field.
