This postcard-sized blank-backed issue depicts heavyweight champions from Sullivan through Louis. They are printed on a thin chipboard similar to strip cards. The set originated as a late-1940s 16-card enveloped issue sold for a quarter at New York City newsstands run by former boxer Kid Herman as well as at Stillman's Gym. Offered here is a run of 16 cards with mixed print colors (red blue and black) comprising the base set. Also included is a wrapper (an envelope) depicting John L. Sullivan. Cards average EX condition with a few better and a few lesser. As issued the set retailed for $0.25; the prices have increased over the last 70 years. 16 cards total plus envelope.
