Early in the summer of 2016 we received startling a call from a gentleman from southwestern New Jersey. The gentleman explained that he and his siblings had come into an inheritance some fifteen years ago that contained a variety of collectibles and family heirlooms. At the beginning of summer the gentleman had for nostalgia reasons opened up a box that he thought merely contained various family documents and photos – and was shocked to find an enormous grouping of 1914 and 1915 Cracker Jacks at the bottom of the box! Within a few days we met with the family members at their home near the quaint New Jersey town of Stockton. We quickly realized that they had done their homework: not only did they have a thorough understanding of the importance and value of the cards but they were familiar with Love of the Game’s history of presenting historically important finds to the hobby and treating such consignments with the proper respect. Within an hour we were on our way home with an astonishing collection of more than 170 Cracker Jacks including virtually all the keys to the sets – one of the most interesting and significant consignments we have ever received. The cards themselves were wonderful – clearly loved by their original owner each were well-handled with even corner and edge wear. However they had also clearly been stored away for the better part of a century so the majority of the cards were still clean and bright their rich red backgrounds unaffected by the age-related toning and wear so often present in the issue. We elected to submit the entire collection to PSA; the result is an amazingly consistent group of cards – between the two issues nearly an entire set can be compiled (the collection is missing only cards #15 of Reb Russell and #123 of Slim Sallee to complete a mixed-year set). Attractive VG 3 card of Nap Rucker minor caramel staining at the top edge (also visible on the reverse) . Minor corner rounding is also evident though the card is exceptional for the grade.
