Of particular interest to us is the social statement made on the Turkey Red cards. White boxers are typically pictured in boxing arenas with adoring fans looking on from the background rich and regal decor all around. African-American boxers are typically pictured outside as if they were fighting behind a barn or in a yard. By the year this card was issued Johnson was a celebrity and had been world heavyweight champion for two years - hardly the type who would be fighting behind a barn.
