Pius "Pi" Schwert was a catcher with an extremely brief baseball career just parts of five minor league and two major league seasons between 1914 and 1921. His most important career achievement had little to do with baseball as he was a local businessman in the Buffalo New York area who was ultimately elected to the United States House of Representatives. He played baseball for the 4th Naval District team during World War I later played semipro ball while working his way up to president of Bank of Angola was a master at his Masonic Lodge president of the fire department and ultimately was elected to congress in 1939. Presented here is the uniform agreement that transferred him to the Newark Indians of the International League in 1916. The Yankees were paid $500 for the rights to Schwert who hit .232 in 263 at bats the most at bats in any of his minor league seasons on record. The agreement was signed by Hall of Famer Jacob Ruppert owner of the Yankees as well as James R. Price co-owner of the Newark Indians (the other owner was Fred Tenney).
