One of the key football issues of the 1950s the 1958 Topps issue features a design similar in style to the following year's baseball issue with the player's photo depicted inside an oval surrounded by a colorful border. The set includes the rookie cards of both Jim Brown and Sonny Jurgensen as well as second year cards from Bart Starr Jim Ringo Bill George and Ray Berry. This is a particularly interesting set in that the cards are all very sharp and clean a majority with EX-MT or better corners and strong color. The technical grade of the cards however are reduced by two key flaws: the Topps quality control of the era has of course resulted in a higher number of off-center cards. Secondly a great many of these cards in particular are impacted by what appears to be wax stains on the card surfaces likely from the wax wrappers in which they were housed. A condition breakdown of the cards would be approximately 11% EX-MT 30% EX 35% VG/EX; 23% VG and a few GOOD or lesser. Key cards are #2 Layne (VG/EX); #3 Schmidt (VG/EX); #10 Moore (VG/EX); #16 Marchetti (EX); #18 Lary (VG/EX); #22 Unitas (VG); #35 Bednarik (EX); #39 Stanfel (EX); #42 Tunnell (EX); #52 Groza (VG); #57 Morall (EX); #59 McCormack (VG); #66 Starr (EX); #73 Gifford (VG); #75 Johnson VG; #76 Butler (EX); #81 Creekmur (VG/EX); #86 Tittle (VG); #89 Nomellini (VG/EX); #90 Jurgensen (VG); #93 Perry (EX); #102 Brown (EX); #103 Ringo (VG/EX); #105 Richter (VG/EX); #106 Donovan (EX); #119 George (EX); #120 Berry (VG); #122 McElhenny (VG/EX); #126 McDonald (VG/EX); #127 Matson (EX); and #129 Blanda (VG/EX). We took the liberty of submitting card #62 of Jim Brown to PSA; the resulting grade was VG-EX+ 4.5 largely due to centering. A strong and clean group of cards from one of the hobby's key sets including many Hall of Famers and one of the most important HOF rookie cards in Jim Brown. 132 cards total.
