From the estate of Walter Johnson this snapshot was taken at the Opening Day ceremonies in 1921 in Washington. A crowd of fans sit in the stadium grandstand the photo clearly taken from field level depicting suited owner Clark Griffith alongside manager George McBride and World War I AEF Commander John J Pershing. Pershing an American hero and 1920 presidential candidate sat in the VP's box for the game which was won by the Red Sox 6-3 in a lackluster performance by Walter Johnson. By 1921 Pershing was the US Army Chief of Staff during which time he created the framework of what is today the United States Interstate Highway System. The photo is somewhat faded with what appears to be some paper remnants and mild staining likely part of a photo album at some point. Still the image is clear each of the photo's key subjects numbered with pencil notations on the reverse (along with more scrapbook remnants). An excellent piece of American history directly from the estate of Walter Johnson.
