Sensational cabinet photo depicting a player we believe to be Fred Rehse of the Minneapolis Millers. Produced by the A.E. Woolett studio of Minneapolis the photo is extraordinarily crisp the wool fabric of the player's uniform visible in incredible detail down to individual wrinkles and stitches in the uniform lettering. The photo has been graded GOOD 30 by SGC due primarily to the only method we have of identifying the player the words "Fred Rehse" written on the reverse in pencil. Rehse appears in the 1887 N172 Old Judge issue with six different poses with biographical information courtesy of Miller Gonsowski & Masson's excellent book The Photographic Baseball Cards Of Goodwin & Company quoting the March 3 1888 issue of The Sporting News as saying "Mr. Gooding (manager of the Millers) has signed another experiment Fred Rehse a pitcher recommended by Elmer Foster. Elmer thinks he is a coming man but of course time alone will tell." According to Baseball-reference.com Rehse lasted precisely two games in the 1888 season winning one and losing one giving up 20 hits in 17 innings pitched with a 3.18 earned run average. He did last long enough apparently to take quite a few photos in uniform as he appears in the six aforementioned Old Judge poses. While we cannot be 100% certain that the player depicted on this lovely cabinet is indeed Rehse there is a striking resemblence between the player on the N172s and the subject of this photo which coupled with the name written on the reverse lead us to believe it is. Regardless one of the finest images on a baseball cabinet we have ever encountered.
