I have one to sell!
Late in the spring we were contacted by our good friend David Seideman of Forbes regarding the family heirloom of a reader. It seemed that a Michigan-area family were direct descendents of former Detroit Wolverines pitcher Charles Getzein and were in possession of a photo album containing old tintypes and snapshots mostly of unknown subjects. Amidst the photos was this a Tomlinson cabinet composite photo of the champion 1887 Wolverines. David covered the find in his column and the family was kind enough to consider Love of the Game and consign the piece to us. The cabinet is one of the popular and highly desirable 1887 Tomlinson Studios cabinets relatively rare with an unknown quantity distributed in its year of issue. While it can be assumed that individual cabinets depicting the 14 different subjects on this composite were manufactured not all have been discovered as of yet. This cabinet which has clearly been trimmed at the bottom of the mount with its lower-left corner clipped as well. Despite all this this is an exceptional cabinet featuring one of the most popular teams of its era and including Hall of Famers Dan Brouthers Sam Thompson Ned Hanlon and Deacon White. Getzein who won 29 games during the season is also featured at the upper-left.
