It is the slug which chronicles Criger's refusal to accept money to throw the game's very first World Series that tells the important story here. It was that refusal that endeared him to Ban Johnson who at the time was just building the American League and recognized the ramifications of Criger's selflessness and integrity along with what could have happened to the fledgling league had a team thrown the first championship. Johnson ensured that Criger was a beneficiary of his pension fund in his post-retirement years and it may have been that very fund that received money from the 1930 Boston Post Old-Timer's game.
