I have one to sell!
Known as a hard-nosed ballplayer despite his slight size and appearance Lou Criger is depicted here with Yankees catcher Jeff Sweeney in this news service photo by famed photographer George Grantham Bain. The photo affixed to the Culver Pictures backing despite being a beautiful and expressive one is of secondary importance in this particular case. It is the slug which chronicles Criger's refusal to accept money to throw the game's very first World Series that tells the important story here. It was that refusal that endeared him to Ban Johnson who at the time was just building the American League and recognized the ramifications of Criger's selflessness and integrity along with what could have happened to the fledgling league had a team thrown the first championship. Johnson ensured that Criger was a beneficiary of his pension fund in his post-retirement years and it may have been that very fund that received money from the 1930 Boston Post Old-Timer's game. A wonderful companion piece.
