Issued over a 17-year period between 1901 and 1917 these attractive supplements were blank-backed black and white photos that were included with each issue of the weekly men's magazine. The supplements featured not only baseball players but other athletes actresses models and other subjects appealing to the readers of a men's magazine. The oversized (11 1/4" x 16 1/4") pieces are due to their thin paper and large size very difficult to find in premium condition as is the case with this supplement of Detroit Hall of Famer "Wahoo" Sam Crawford. While the severely torn right edge is the primary condition concern severe wear at the folded center chipped corners and some moderate staining round out the picture. Still the image of Crawford himself is beautiful some blurring at the hands and feet suggesting that he was actually moving as the photo was taken rather than posing as with so many other shots of the era. We are big fans of early 1900s supplements and the Police Gazette issues are among our favorites.
