Matted to a finished size of 24 3/4" x 19 1/4" this attractive woodcut illustrates both an 1859 cricket match between the "All England Eleven" and the "United States Twenty-Two " as well as a baseball game both played at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken NJ. Elysian Fields is believed to be the site of the first organized baseball game dating to 1845. The cricket match depicted in the woodcut was the first overseas cricket tour by an English team and was one of just five games the team played on the tour including three in the US and two in Canada. Among the players the English team faced was American baseball pioneer and eventual Hall of Famer Harry Wright. The woodcut is in outstanding condition though the matting makes it impossible for us to assess the quality of the edges. The piece has been folded down the middle as expected but the image quality is extremely strong. The matte has been wrapped entirely in cellophane for protection. A wonderful piece of 19th Century artwork documenting the first overseas cricket matches for the All England Eleven team as well as an early baseball game both played at the legendary Elysian Fields.
