The key card in one of the hobby"s most rare and desirable vintage bakery issues this is a spectacular card from the very rare D304 General Baking Co. series. Issued between 1911 and 1914 by the Buffalo NY company the issue known today as D304 and commonly called "Brunners Bread" cards is one of the more unique issues of its era due in part to the size of the cards (the cards are slightly larger than the more widely-distributed tobacco issues of the day) and partially due to the striking images of the subjects. Unlike other baseball issues of the day which often shared poses or images across multiple sets the poses and illustrations in the D304 set are found only in this issue. The D304 issue is also significantly more rare than the popular tobacco issues of the era with its key cards rarely becoming available for sale in the hobby. The 25 cards from this issue are a rarity and we are proud to offer a large assortment of cards from the set in our inaugural auction highlighted by this the set"s most important and collectible subject. This is an extremely difficult card to obtain in any condition. Indeed despite Cobb being one of the top two or three subjects of prewar card collecting with his cards being extraordinarily popular and widely-collected only 28 graded examples of the D304 Brunners Cobb have been counted in the PSA and SGC population reports. Compare this for example with Cobb"s green-background T206 - the most "scarce" of his four T206 appearances - of which there are hundreds of graded examples available. This particular example graded VG3 by PSA is an outstanding example for the grade. While D304s can be found with five different back varieties (Brunners Bread Butter Krust Bread General Baking Company Weber Bakery and Martens Bakery) this example features the Brunners Bread back advertisement.Universally regarded as one of Cobb"s greatest cards and a crown jewel of any collection this is a rarely-offered example of one of card collecting"s most treasured subjects.
