The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest US Military honor awarded by Congress for acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. Awarded by the President the medal was created during the Civil War to recognize men who distinguished themselves in combat with an enemy. Since then more than 3 500 medals have awarded each typically presented in a formal White House ceremony. Presented is a collection of items signed by five Medal of Honor recipients: • Gregory Boyington World War II combat pilot• Michell Paige Marine Colonel who stopped an entire Japanese regiment by manning four machine guns during the Battle of Guadalcanal in WWII• Richard K Sorenson US Marine who threw himself on a grenade in the Pacific Theater in WWII to save five Marines. Sorenson survived one of just four of 27 Marines to perform similar acts of valor and survive.• James Stockdale US Navy vice admiral and POW during the Vietnam War• Louis H.
