The early 1950s ushered in a series of stylistic changes to card collecting that resulted in rapid dramatic improvements in quality that transformed the hobby. The 1950-52 Bowman issues featured beautiful colorful artwork and the "52 Topps issue raised the bar increasing card sizes and focusing even more on player artwork and back detail. In 1953 however both companies outdid themselves with Bowman producing what many believe to be the most beautiful baseball card set ever and Topps improving upon their "52 design with colorful player images and player information superimposed over dark bold backgrounds.Today the 1953 Topps set remains widely collected partially due to popular cards of Jackie Robinson Mickey Mantle Satchel Paige and Willie Mays. Set collectors however recognize the difficulty of the tough Hall of Famers high numbers and single print cards in the set. Card #228 of Hal Newhouser is a convergence of all three: a single-printed high number card of a Hall of Famer making this one of the more difficult cards in the set to obtain particularly in high grade.Due to the difficulty of this card it also tends to be the example of Newhouser that Hall of Fame collectors strive to obtain. The demand for this card is obviously high resulting in a higher graded population of the card than many others in the set despite its relative scarcity. Nevertheless this is a difficult card of a Hall of Famer a single-printed high-number card from a popular postwar set and one of postwar collecting"s more popular cards.Population Data:PSA Population: 468 total graded 56 at this level 6 higherSGC Population: 88 total graded 6 at this level 1 higher
