Beautiful portrait image of the young Yankee Clipper issued as part of the R303-B Goudey premium set of 1939. The Goudey R303 issue is the only Goudey baseball release to feature any reference to the National Chicle company the assets of which Goudey purchased in 1937. The reverse of the R303 cards feature "how to" illustrations that gave baseball instruction to youngsters; the same illustrations and diagrams were featured in the R344 Rabbit Maranville "How To" booklets issued by National Chicle with second series Batter-Up cards in 1937. While it is unknown how the R303s were distributed we believe that they were premiums associated with a Diamond Stars brand of gum that was issued by Goudey without cards at some point between 1937 and 1940.
