Produced by Gum Inc. in 1940 the R335 Playball issue of that year is one of the most underrated prewar sets of the gum card era. Featuring 240 cards complete with black and white photography along with extensive biographical information the set featured players contemporary to the time as well as more historical players that had already become legendary to baseball fans. Recently we sat with a collector who bought cards in packs in the early 1940s and he mused about those Hall of Famers stating that the 1940 Playballs were the preferred cards among his friends for that very reason - pulling a Christy Mathewson or Joe Jackson card from a pack was a thrill. Presented here is a lovely complete set diligently compiled by a dedicated collector with a strong focus on eye appeal in the middle grades. 51 of the cards have been graded 41 by PSA including the majority of the keys cards. The set is remarkably consistent however largely comprised of cards that are particularly attractive for the technical grade.
