The final issue in Bowman Gum"s eight-year run as a baseball card manufacturer the 1955 issue featured the company"s most unique design: at the dawn of the television era the set featured a player photograph centered inside a large woodgrain border meant to resemble a television set. The design"s nostalgic undertones made it popular among contemporary collectors - its condition sensitivity lies in the set"s significant centering issues coupled with notorious chipping and wear along the cards" brown borders. Hobby lore holds that the first and last cards of a given set are subject to condition flaws due to sitting at the top or bottom of a stack often wrapped in rubber bands. When a set"s #1 card happens to be of a Hall of Famer the demand for high-grade copies only increases due to the player"s popularity. In this case the #1 card is of Hall of Fame relief pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm; the card is a particularly strong high-grade example with sharp edges and corners and centering consistent with the grade. This is an outstanding example of a desirable card of a popular Hall of Fame pitcher.Population data:PSA Population: 384 total graded 27 at this level 1 higherSGC Population: 51 total graded none at this level 2 higher
