Elam Vangilder had an 11-year major league career that spanned from 1919 to 1929 and included a 19-win season with the 1922 Browns. A knee injury during the 1929 season required surgery and Vangilder would never play in the majors again. Captured here during his attempt to rehabilitate during a brief stint with the 1933 Minneapolis Millers the pitcher would retire from baseball the following season and would walk with cane for the rest of his life.
