On the surface this appears to be an ordinary midgrade 1957 Topps baseball card. Sure the centering is strong and the color crisp but the card itself does exhibit some mild wear at the corners and edges - enough to make the unindoctrinated collector wonder "What is so special about this card that it gets to be a lot all by itself in a hobby auction?" But to the indoctrinated collector it is clear. This is a card of Don Mossi. Don Mossi is the patron saint of Love of the Game Auctions. Our name is proudly emblazoned on Mossi's Baseball-Reference page (check it out for yourself). The man is a legend around these parts a symbol of 1950s baseball greatness. While perusing his Baseball-Reference page note his 3.43 lifetime earned run average. Note his 55 lifetime complete games in just 165 starts. Note his extremely low walks/game ratio or his appearance on the 1957 All-Star team. His nickname "Ears " escapes us; we can't figure out the reason - probably some strange locker-room story that will never become public knowledge; players of that era were notoriously close-lipped when it came to behind-the-scenes stuff. One of those odd stories about which we on the outside can only speculate. Perhaps nobody can recall the reason for the nickname; such fables are often lost to history. Still we're proud to offer this wonderful card of "Ears " even if we don't know the reason for the nickname.
I have one to sell!
