I have one to sell!
If the Goudey Gum Company was the most "mainstream" producer of gum cards of the 1930s then the 1938 "Heads Up" set was among their more scarce and yet interesting output. While the 1941 set is certainly more difficult to obtain it is the 1938s that have a much greater concentration of Hall of Famers. With expensive rookie cards of Bob Feller and Bobby Doerr and the most popular card of Joltin" Joe DiMaggio along with several other Hall of Famers - and two cards of each player - the 1938 Goudey set is extremely challenging despite its small size of just 48 cards. One of the rarely-discussed nuances in this set surrounds card #246 of Hall of Fame catcher Ernie Lombardi of the Reds. The initial print run of 1938 Goudey erroneously listed Lombardi as being with the Red Sox. While a small number of these cards have filtered into the hobby it is unknown if the "Red Sox" cards ever actually made it into packs. A decision was quickly made to hide this error by producing a black stamp including the letter "s" to the left of a small baseball. The overwhelming majority of #246 Lombardi cards had the error "corrected" in this crude manner. At some point late in the first-series production run however the company corrected the error by correcting the team name the proper way - removing the black baseball and "s" overprint and simply printing Lombardi"s team name as "Reds." This "Reds" version is found very rarely thought they did circulate as factory-cut examples with normal wear can occasionally be found. This is a low-grade example graded FAIR 20 by SGC due largely to a heavy crease across the center but also due to wear consistent with the grade. An outstanding example of a little-known but very scarce variation of a prewar card from a scarce gum card issue.
