The George Blome & Son Co. of Baltimore was a confectionery company that distributed a variety of chocolates penny candies cough drops and the like. Located at 617-621 Baltimore St. for a period the company like many others engaged in the practice of overprinting its logo on the reverse of baseball cards as a method of advertising. Today the "Blome's Chocolates" overprint is an exceptionally rare subset of E94 George Close Candy cards. This example featuring Honus Wagner is particularly desirable due to its subject. The card graded FAIR 20 by SGC features a strong image with several creases across the card and considerable corner and edge wear. The Blome's Chocolates overprint on the reverse is boldly struck in red and is quite legible and clean. Despite the grade the card is quite exceptional. An E94 George Close Candy card of Honus Wagner in any grade is highly prized among collectors; the addition of the Blome's overprint adds considerable value and desirability to the card. While dependable population data is not available it is safe to say that the population of an E94 Blome's Wagner is just a fraction of those E94 Wagners that have been graded.
