Beautiful and rare premium issued by the Phillies Cigar Company in that magical season of 1961. 6 1/2" x 9" photo card was made available to collectors along with a Mickey Mantle model youth baseball glove in exchange for 20 Phillies Cigar bands and $3.39. The premiums were likely distributed between 1961 and 1964, based on expiration dates in various advertisements for the promotion. Regardless, the cards are scarce today, with PSA having graded just 51 examples. Due to the fact that the cards were redeemable by mail order and targeted children, the majority of the few surviving examples are found in lower grade.
This example is clean and well-centered, graded GOOD 2 by PSA due to some wear at the corners, light wrinkling at the bottom right, and some overall surface wear here and there, none of which interferes with the eye appeal of the card to any great degree. Edge and corner wear can be better observed on the reverse, where some modest soiling can also be found. Still, the card presents far stronger than the assigned grade, a tough premium, and an elusive card of Mickey Mantle.
