With Major League Baseball's recent reinstatement of Shoeless Joe Jackson from the league's ineligible list, interest in noteworthy material related to the former outfielder, one of the game's preeminent sluggers, will no doubt be at an all-time high. Jackson's banishment from the game following the 1921 Black Sox trial tarnished his legacy, forever transforming his story into one of the most tragic tales in the long history of America's greatest pastime. Now, for the first time in almost 100 years he may end up on a Hall of Fame ballot when the Hall's Classic Baseball Era Committee convenes in 2027, just two short years away. Shot at Cleveland's League Park in the early 1910's, this exceptional Type I photo of Shoeless Joe with fellow Naps teammate Terry Turner was captured by famed Cleveland-based photojournalist Louis Van Oeyen whose Type I's easily rank among the most coveted in the hobby today. Photo measures approx. 4.5" x 5" overall with outstanding clarity and contrast, allowing for close examination of fine details like Joe Jackson's enormous hands, necessary for wielding the massive war club he named "Black Betsy" and used to clobber baseballs throughout his career. Obvious creasing is visible at the upper-right corner with a small chip to the corner at lower-right. Pieces of brown tape have been adhered to the verso, partially obscuring photographer Van Oeyen's personal credit stamping applied in green. This remarkable photo of the Cleveland superstar, and likely future Hall of Famer, has been authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
