Catcher Al Schellhase (Schellasse) sports such a dark uniform that even this card with average photo contrast shows him in sharp relief against such a light studio backdrop. Four of his five N172 poses focus on fielding ability, which is still higher than his low-power MLB career numbers, with a .133 career batting average and one (1) RBI. Some teams just wanted a guy to stand behind hitters and absorb the incoming fastballs!
This PSA VG 3 grade shows the mustachioed "Schelley" in enough detail to know his cap is striped and his jersey buttons are white. Corners show just touches of wear, with chipping on three edges explaining most of this lower technical grade. Its pink tint appears on a meaningful number of Old Judge cards, following a vogue for tinting seen in its decade of release. Centering is excellent, and its back shows a faint spot, perhaps from an album mount. A solid choice for collectors seeking players from the longer reaches of their Old Judge checklist! The PSA population report shows this card as their one graded example!
