First baseman Jim Powell played parts of 1884 and 1885 in the major leagues and spent eight years trying to get back. Shown as player/manager of Sioux City's Corn Huskers from the Western Association, Powell was just 29 years old when this card was issued but would be done as an everyday player after 1889.

The PSA GOOD 2 grade shows an image with average depth and detail, rounded corners, decent centering, and foxing along its borders and parts of the reverse. This card presents a bit better than its technical grade, given the text clarity on Jim's nameplate and the interesting look he brought to this photo itself. The combined population reports contain four graded examples, with just one scoring higher at PSA 4. While calling something "hard to beat" is usually metaphoric, this is literally beaten by just one other known card.

This card appears as #373-1's reference image on page 355 of the Old Judge book by Miller, Gonsowski, and Masson. Love of the Game is proud to offer several cards seen in their outstanding work of research and presentation as part of our 100+ N172 listings.
