George Davis broke in with Cleveland's Spiders in 1890 and played 20 years in the majors, primarily as a shortstop. He earned a title with the 1906 White Sox and was inducted to Cooperstown in 1998. It's fortunate that T206 captured so many players from its era, as they give us enduring and accessible portraits of players it took far too long for baseball itself to recognize.
This bright, colorful SGC EX 5 features a dramatic sky and "burning bush" aspect to its composition. (Sootier city skies of that era often glowed in afternoon or evening light, so this shows more than artistic license.) While overall centering is a touch northward, the balanced corners and edges make this an ideal example of its grade. The reverse is a Piedmont 150 Factory 25 and would not look out of place in a higher holder. As it is, the SGC population report shows just seven higher!
