Trivia buffs remember that Hal Newhouser accomplished something few pitchers can imagine by winning back-to-back MVP awards, but also note he finished second the year after his second award, almost notching an unheard-of third straight! His massive performance peak from 1944-49 no doubt made his best case for eventual Cooperstown induction, a bit like Sandy Koufax's work in the 1960s.
