Some collectors perk up the moment any catching gear appears on a card, as "the Tools of Ignorance" are often signs that the photographer and player knew a bit more about the game and its need for on-field safety at such a critical position. The five N172 poses for John Kerins show a mixture of him wearing this gear and others in uniform alone.

Louisville catcher Kerins is shown in that 19th century catching regalia, already a decent match for the chest protector worn by professionals to this day. This standing pose also shows off his high socks ("sanitaries") and shiny black boots, complementing the overall look worn by Louisville fielders.

While the SGC AUTHENTIC grade implies some trimming or surface alteration, spots of paper loss at the upper left are its most notable issues, and they stand well away from the well-centered central image. The combined population reports show just a handful available with this pose, and fewer of Kerins cards have been graded compared to many others in the Old Judge set.
