Real photo postcard depicting Recreation Park in San Francisco during an exhibition game between the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox. Shot during the 1913 White Sox-Giants world tour, this is a tremendous view of the seldom-seen park with a handwritten inscription at the bottom reading "N.Y. Giants vs White Sox, Nov 15-13 Mathewson Pitching." While we cannot confirm that Mathewson is in-fact the pitcher, as he's far too small to make out on the card, the postmarked date of Nov. 19 helps to corroborate that claim. Newspaper archive research has revealed Matty did indeed pitch in San Francisco on November 15, just days prior to the postmarked date. Before a crowd of 10,000+ Matty is reported to have tossed a complete game victory that afternoon, scattering 10 hits in a 6-3 Giants win. Postally used card measures 3.5" x 5.5" with typical gentle rounding at the corners that does not intrude upon the fantastic central image of the ballpark.
