Clear, well-printed back variation for Block & Kuhl Co. active wear stores from the M101-4/5 sets printed by Felix Mendelssohn. The photo shows Hall of Famer Harry Hooper, its PSA VG 3.5 grade reflecting corner rounding with a slight bit of surface wear. This set proves exceedingly tough, however, as PSA has graded just 24 Block & Kuhl cards total. The card has been mislabeled by PSA (we are submitting it for reholdering and the winning bidder will receive it in the correct holder), but appears to be the only graded Block & Kuhl card of Hooper.
M101-4 and M101-5 are sets Mendelssohn created with 200 ballplayers of the mid-1910s. Card backs often featuring ads from a range of stores and companies, no doubt for their own marketing purposes. Contemporary advertising shows some stores giving groups of cards away as an incentive for in-person shopping and others sold their sets by mail order. The Block & Kuhl examples are among the most rare of the different backs, with stiff competition to obtain examples of the few surviving Hall of Famers. An outstanding card from a very rare issue.
