Three of Dave Orr's seven N172 poses feature him with a bat in those strong mitts, befitting his great skill and power at the plate. We offer a pair of those poses in this auction as part of 100+ Old Judge listings overall. His "bat ready about 45 degrees" pose is catalogued #360-6 in the Goodwin & Co. photography reference book. One of the great hitters of his era, Orr posted a .342 lifetime batting average, and batted .371 in his one year in the Player's League, where he faced most of the National League's best players. His career ended tragically at just 31 years old, when he suffered a stroke while playing in an exhibition game. The stroke left him paralyzed on his left side.
This PSA VG 3 (MK) grade reflects an above-average player image, with good details that stand out from its studio backdrop. Centering pushes southward against the lower border and shows some corner rounding, all in line with its technical grade. An inked "X" on the back's upper right corner merits the "MK" qualifier without changing much about the card itself (some light pink marks on the top edge do more in that regard). The combined population reports show up to a half-dozen graded examples, with its exact count unknown because some PSA grades, like this one, lack his Columbus or Brooklyn team designation. Finding and upgrading Orr's cards proves a tough task, however you slice it!
