Original Type I photo depicting Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s iconic #3 Goodwrench car during his final race. Regarded as "The Most Pivotal Moment in NASCAR History," Earnhardt tragically lost his life on February 18, 2001 when his Chevy crashed into a wall on the last lap of the 43rd running of the Daytona 500. This 8" x 10" original color photo provides a tremendous look at Earnhardt's car on that fateful day, with rival Jeff Gordon's #24 Chevy in pursuit. One week later at Rockingham, Gordon would famously leave the pole position open as a tribute to his late friend, a classy gesture from one of Earnhardt's fiercest competitors. Earnhardt's death resulted in a significant cultural shift within NASCAR, ushering in an array of driver safety improvements including mandated head-and-neck restraints, redesigned seats and seat belt systems, softer barriers, and more. Known as "The Intimidator," Earnhardt's seven cup championships are tied for most all-time with fellow NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty and he currently ranks 8th all-time with 76 career race wins.
