George "Rip" Van Haltren ranks among the best hitters and baserunners yet to be enshrined by Cooperstown and compares to modern outfielders like Johnny Damon and Kenny Lofton. His impressive facial hair brings him even closer to Johnny Damon's time with the 2000s Red Sox. As with other 19th century stars, Rip pitched many times during his career and claimed 40 victories on top of his 2500+ hits.

Val Haltren appeared several times in the Old Judge issue and this bat-in-hand pose makes more sense when you know he played outfield when not pitching for Chicago. The SGC GOOD 2 grade reflects its modest contrast and clarity, flecks along the top edge, and toning on the reverse. It remains impressive for an otherwise clean surface and scarcity, as its population report shows just three total graded, with none higher!

The 1889 set date creates intrigue when looking at Rip's own career, as manager Cap Anson did not send van Haltren to the mound at all during 1889. Calling him a "Chicago pitcher" implies he took at least a few turns on the hill.
