Hage's Dairy of Southern California sponsored regional card sets from 1949-51, offered at concession stands for Lane Field Park, home of the PCL San Diego Padres. Most came packaged with popcorn and it's possible others entered the hobby via company or team promotions. 1949 proves the rarest of these Hage's sets and contains 105 players on thin stock with blank backs and one of four color tints, Black & White, Sepia, Blue, or Green. The combined SGC/PSA population reports for its F65-1 catalog number show fewer than 200 total graded examples for all players, so these will be tough to find in any grade. Love of the Game offers many examples with exceedingly low populations in this auction.

Veteran outfielder Max West made a second career for himself in the PCL that lasted well into the 1950s. He clubbed over 200 homers in its offense-friendly stadiums, no doubt finding a new cadre of fans in that process. 1949 Hage's contains two poses for Max, this portrait and another doing what he did best, hitting.

The SGC VG/EX 4 grade reflects touched corners on an otherwise crease-free, clean card. While some print speckles could be an issue for its original reviewer, this overall look resembles higher grades. It remains the highest of just six total examples across the PSA/SGC population reports, so scarcity proves more signficant than one technical element! This will be a wonderful addition to any PCL or San Diego collection.
