Clarence Maddern spent almost a decade in the Cubs system, cracking their MLB roster a handful of seasons. This L.A. photo marks the start of his second career as a line drive hitter in the PCL across four of its franchises.

The SGC EX 5 rating reflects slightly rounded corners and toning along its bottom edge, a fair grade for an otherwise pleasing and well-centered card. Hage's cards provide unique looks at the PCL uniforms, San Diego's stadium, and the players themselves, giving this set special cachet among postwar issues. Scarcity also trumps technical grade, as the combined SGC/PSA population reports show this is his only graded example featuring the Hage's ad back! Any PCL collector should be excited to add a card of this caliber.

Hage's Dairy of Southern California sponsored regional card sets from 1949-51, offered at concession stands for Lane Field Park, home of the PCL San Diego Padres. Most came packaged with popcorn and it's possible others entered the hobby via company or team promotions. 1950 singles prove tough indeed to find, as the PSA population report counts 66 total graded for its 128-player checklist. All 1950 cards come with black-and-white fronts and use similar text size for player and team names, distinguishing it from Hage's other years.
