This young, corkscrew pose of Harry "Suitcase" Simpson looks like a fun outtake the photographer added to his roll and later decided to make part of this Hage's set. Many of San Diego's players received multiple poses for 1950, with hitting phenom Simpson getting four! This "follow-thru" shot is one of his tougher variations to find today.

The SGC POOR 1 grade follows from rounded corners and creasing along its top edge, where thin card stock also led to spider lines of flaked ink. Its reverse shows modest toning, so you can tell this card got its share of collection affection. The combined SGC/PSA population reports show just two confirmed follow-thru cards for Simpson, so scarcity will mean more than technical grade for many PCL set builders and especially those seeking Hage's ad backs.

Hage's Dairy of Southern California sponsored regional card sets from 1949-51, offered at concession stands for Lane Field Park, home of the PCL San Diego Padres. Most came packaged with popcorn and it's possible others entered the hobby via company or team promotions. 1950 singles prove tough indeed to find, as the PSA population report counts 66 total graded for its 128-player checklist. All 1950 cards come with black-and-white fronts and use similar text size for player and team names, distinguishing it from Hage's other years.
