Within the N172 Old Judge issue, Mickey Hughes is considered one of the more scarce cards. His N173 cabinet is no different, a very difficult card to obtain in any condition. This card corresponds with card #240-6 in the N172 issue, and has been graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC for reasons having nothing to do with the image itself. Some light pencil notations have been largely erased from the mount, with some additional notations present on the reverse, both of which are largely responsible for the technical grade. The image itself, however, presents extremely well, with outstanding contrast and detail. The 1889 copyright date etched into the negative indicates that the card was not available in 1888, the young pitcher's first season with Brooklyn. Despite a strong 1888, in which he won 25 games, his 1889 was much less successful, as arm trouble derailed his career very early. Hughes was one of the shortest pitchers in baseball history, at just 5'6".
