Beautiful and perhaps one-of-its-kind cabinet portrait of reliable 1908-11 New York Giants shortstop Al Bridwell, as photographed by the Hall's Studio of New York. PSA has graded one example each of six N.Y. players from this impressive set, with several offered in this auction. An extremely difficult cabinet issue, PSA has graded just six examples, all submitted by Love of the Game over the past few months. This VG-EX+ 4.5 grade reflects modest wear and touches to its border. The central image remains a clear and impressive representation of a star from that 1908 team.
This large Hall's Studio image also became the source for a Bridwell T206 card, which those editors retouched with a N.Y. jersey insignia. His single created the infamous Merkle Boner on Sept 23, 1908, so this image captures an era of particular singnificance to Giants and Cubs baseball history.
As a possibly unique issue, researchers used the cabinet production style and players included to set a 1908-09 date range. This makes the cabinet among the earliest images to show Bridwell with New York.
