Mounted 1913 photograph of Native American, Jim Thorpe, shortly after signing with John McGraw's New York Giants. A two-time college football All-American and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Thorpe would later be voted "the greatest athlete of the half century" through an Associated Press poll of sportswriters in 1950. Incredibly, he would join the Giants only months after securing two gold medals for the United States in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Here, a young Thorpe appears at the Giants spring training facility in Marlin, TX beside Giants team doctor, Dr. Frank Finely in a rare image we have not seen elsewhere. Thorpe is wearing a first baseman's mitt while in the uniform style worn by the Giants of 1912. Finley stands in a 1911 Giants uniform, complete with glove, suggesting he was allowed to participate in workouts to some degree. Mounted photo measures approx. 6.25" by 8.25" and appears to be of the era, with telltale silvering present when photo is tilted towards a light source. Identifiers of both men (now partially faded) have been added in fountain pen at the bottom edge, reading: "Jim Thorpe, Dr. Finely, N.Y. B.B. Club, 1913 Marlin, TX." Mount itself measures 10" x 12" overall with obvious toning and does not appear to have been initially intended for a photo of this type. A few abrasions can be spotted across the face of both mount and photo, with limited chipping to photo at the top edge. Areas of tape reside and paper loss appear on verso where mount was likely adhered to something and removed. A unique early vintage photo depicting one of history's greatest and most celebrated athletes.
