Nicknamed "Ice Box" because he was so cool under pressure, Elton Chamberlain won 32 games for the 1889 St. Louis Browns, with which he is pictured on this 1889 Old Judge card. Chamberlain did not wear a baseball glove, which enabled him to throw with either hand, which he occasionally even did when pitching. Chamberlain, who loved the night life, struggled after the pitcher's mound was moved to 60 feet, 6 inches from the plate, his career not lasting long after. This card is a beauty for the grade, the technical assessment relating almost entirely to scrapbook and adhesive residue on the reverse.
