Spectacular, high-grade N172 of Chicago pitcher Mark Baldwin, pictured near the beginning of a 7-year major league career that would see him win 20 or more games (including 33 in 1890) in four consecutive seasons. After jumping to the Players' League in 1890, Baldwin, who had been the property of the Columbus team, decided instead to sign with his hometown Pittsburgh Alleghenys, and began recruiting others to do the same. When he convinced pitcher Silver King to sign, stealing him from the St. Louis Browns, the Alleghenys became known as the Pirates.  Baldwin was ultimately arrested and jailed for conspiracy in this deal, though the charges were eventually dropped.  A gorgeous card of the man responsible for the Pittsburgh Pirates' nickname.
